What words can we use when we want to say “ when”?
There are 4 words that we use often which are เวลา /we-la/, ตอน /dton/ พอ /por/ and เมื่อ meua
When you talk about specific time in the past or in the future, you will use the word ตอน /dton/.
For example,
When I was 18
= ตอนผมอายุ 18
/ dton pŏm aa-yú 18/
When I lived in Japan
= ตอนผมอยู่ญี่ปุ่น
/ dton pŏm yòo yêe-bpùn /
I will leave a house when my friends come pick me up tomorrow
ผมจะออกจากบ้านตอนเพื่อนมารับพรุ่งนี้
/pŏm jà òk jàak bâan-dton pêuan maa ráp prûng-née /
If you want to talk about more general situations and there’s no specific time like a timeline, we use เวลา /we-la/. Like “whenever” this happens, I …..(bla bla bla)
For example,
when I feel lonely, I call my friends
= เวลาฉันเหงา ฉันโทรหาเพื่อน
/ way-laa chăn ngăo · chăn toh hăa pêuan /
when you’re lonely, you can call me up
= เวลาคุณเหงา คุณโทรหาผมได้นะ
/ way-laa kun ngăo · kun toh hăa pŏm dâai ná /
When my mom comes visit me, I feel very happy
= เวลาแม่มาหา ฉันมีความสุขมาก
/ way-laa mâe maa hăa · chăn mee kwaam sùk mâak/
And another word to use when you want to say “ when” is the word พอ /por/. This word kind of mean the same thing as “ once” ; once this happens, that happens, or “ as soon as A happens, B happens”
For example,
Once you arrive, call me.
= พอมาถึง โทรมาหาด้วยนะ
/ por maa tĕung · toh maa hăa dûuay ná/
As soon as I arrived, he left.
= พอฉันมาถึง เขาก็ไป
/ por chăn maa tĕung · kăo gôr bpai/
